HID pivCLASS RK40

HID pivCLASS RK40 - Access control system

HID pivCLASS RK40 Reader - HID access control reader

HID pivCLASS RK40 wall switch with keypad contactless biometric reader is suitable for use in security areas meeting the HID FIPS-201 criteria for access Control system and is intended to support the use of a personal identification number (PIN) entered via a keypad and sent directly to a panel or door controller (PIN matched at panel, not on card). To be used in combination with HID pivCLASS Authentication Module (PAM), requires the addition of the contact reader sidecar (available as a kit) and a reconfiguration that can be done in the field. The HID pivCLASS RK40 supports reading any PIV-based card with a contactless interface and containing a Card Authentication Key (CAK) certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions – HID pivCLASS RK40 Reader

Quick answers to common questions about the HID pivCLASS RK40 Reader, its specifications, compatibility, and use in access control systems.

Q. What does PIN matching at the panel mean on the HID RK40?
The RK40 sends the PIN entered on its keypad directly to the access control panel for verification, instead of matching the PIN against a value stored on the card. This allows two-factor authentication (card + PIN) with standard Wiegand-only panels.
Q. Can the HID pivCLASS RK40 be upgraded to a contact reader?
Yes. The RK40 can be field-converted into an RKCL40 by adding a contact reader sidecar kit and reconfiguring, giving it both contact and contactless interfaces for FIPS 201 Limited-access deployments.
Q. What read range does the RK40 deliver?
The RK40 reads ISO 14443 A cards up to 2 inches (5 cm), depending on installation environment and credential type.
Q. Does the RK40 work with HID iCLASS SE and MIFARE cards?
Yes. The RK40 supports HID iCLASS SE, iCLASS SR, standard iCLASS, SE for MIFARE Classic, SE for MIFARE DESFire EV1, plus FIPS 201 credentials such as PIV, PIV-I, CIV, CAC, TWIC and FRAC, and 125 kHz HID Prox, AWID and EM4102.
Q. What protocols does the HID RK40 support?
In Wiegand mode the RK40 outputs Wiegand. In PAM mode it speaks HID pivCLASS protocol or CoreStreet Reader Protocol to a HID pivCLASS Authentication Module.
