Frequently Asked Questions – HID RM40 multiCLASS Reader

Quick answers to common questions about the HID RM40 multiCLASS Reader, its specifications, compatibility, and use in access control systems.

Q. Why use the HID RM40 multiCLASS magstripe reader?
The RM40 is purpose-built for migration - it lets you keep accepting existing magnetic stripe ID cards while introducing 13.56 MHz smart cards on the same door, so credential rollout doesn't have to happen overnight.
Q. Can the RM40 magstripe backplate be removed after migration?
Yes. After site migration is complete, the magstripe backplate can be swapped for a standard backplate, leaving a contactless-only wallswitch reader and removing the magstripe attack surface.
Q. What card technologies does the HID RM40 read?
The RM40 reads vertical magnetic stripe cards and 13.56 MHz cards including HID iCLASS (all memory sizes), MIFARE Classic and DESFire (CSN), ISO 14443A/B, ISO 15693 and US Government FIPS 201 (PIV).
Q. Can the magstripe slot be mounted on either side?
Yes. The flippable backplate lets the vertical magstripe slot be mounted on the left or right side of the core contactless wallswitch reader frame to suit site preferences.
Q. What is the warranty period for the HID RM40 multiCLASS reader?
HID Global warranties the RM40 multiCLASS reader for life against defects in materials and workmanship.
